On December 9, 2008, our friend and colleague Sergey Lvin was on vacation in Hawaii when he had an
accident that left him paralyzed. After a week at a small hospital in Hawaii, he was flown to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston for
neurosurgery and stabilization. The surgery restored a relatively normal
pathway for Sergey’s spinal cord, stabilized his neck with titanium rods, and
made it possible for him to begin rehabilitation procedures. After a two week
stay in Boston, Sergey was transferred back to Eastern Maine Medical Center
in Bangor for an intensive rehabilitation program. Sergey is currently at home, and family
members are able to help provide daily care. He receives rehabilitation and
occupational therapy activities, and is making good progress.
An account was opened as a means to
help Sergey defray the massive uninsured expenses related to his accident. This
account is known as the 'Benefit for Sergey', held at the University Credit Union, Rangeley Road in Orono,
ME.
Some of us in the Math Dept at the University of Maine, where Sergey works, have decided
to put together a collection of nice recipes.
You can download a pdf version of the cookbook here
So enjoy these recipes and have fun preparing them with and/or for your loved ones. And please distribute this
booklet freely to anyone who likes to cook.
You can make a donation to help Sergey by contacting us at

The Lvins are deeply grateful for your kind support. It is times like these that remind
all of us about the many things we take for granted, as well as the connections
we all have with each other during times of hardship.
